Annual Development Programme
A structured, year-long development plan written for your membership grade — 52 weeks, each with a course, practice lessons, a task in your own work, and an entry in your CPD record. It begins the day you join, at no extra charge.
What it is
Development that happens steadily, not in bursts
The Annual Development Programme is a structured, year-long career development plan that the Institute of Administrative Management provides to its members as part of membership. Each member follows a 52-week programme written for their membership grade, covering both administration and management.
Every week focuses on one subject. It brings together a professional course, short practice lessons, a task applied in the member’s own work and an entry in their CPD record, so development happens steadily alongside day-to-day work rather than in occasional bursts.
Who it is for
Five programmes, one for each grade
The programme runs at five membership grades, each matched to a stage of career.
| Grade | Career stage | Focus of the programme |
|---|---|---|
| Affiliate | Workforce grade | Accurate, safe and professional routine administration |
| Associate (AInstAM) | Stage 1 Practitioner | Coordinating and applying methods with growing independence |
| Member (MInstAM) | Stage 2 Professional | Designing and managing processes, projects, budgets or people |
| Fellow (FInstAM) | Stage 3 Strategic Professional | Owning and leading a function |
| Senior Fellow (SFInstAM) | Stage 4 Strategic Leader | Setting direction at board and enterprise level |
Student Members follow the Affiliate programme. The programme serves individual members planning their own development and employers developing staff at every level.
How it works
Four quarters, seven Domains, one review a quarter
The year has 48 course weeks and 4 review weeks, arranged in four quarters. Each quarter covers two of the seven Competency Domains of the IAM Professional Standards, so every member works across all seven in a year.
| Quarter | Theme |
|---|---|
| 1 | Professional Practice and Communication |
| 2 | Operations, Systems and Digital |
| 3 | People, Finance and Resources |
| 4 | Governance, Strategy and Improvement |
The programme starts on the day a member joins or upgrades, not on a fixed calendar date, and members may pause and resume at any point.
Each week the member receives an email that guides them through the week in five steps: read the week’s brief; take the professional course, which ends with a short knowledge check; take one or two linked practice lessons; apply the subject to a real task at work and reflect on it; and log the week in their CPD record. A full week takes about two hours. When time is short, a lighter route of about an hour still counts.
At the end of each quarter a review week replaces the course. The member rates their progress, discusses it with a line manager or mentor and records a quarterly summary. The final week of the year is an annual review, which produces the member’s reflective practice record and their plan for the following year.
What you gain
More than twice the CPD requirement, with the evidence to show for it
For individual members, the programme replaces an unstructured catalogue with a clear plan for the year. A completed year provides between 63.5 and 84.5 hours of structured CPD from courses alone, more than twice the 30-hour annual requirement at the assessed grades, and it meets the ethics and sustainability minimums. The weekly records, quarterly summaries and reflective practice record build a body of evidence that supports appraisals and applications to upgrade.
For employers, the programme is a ready-made development plan for every level of staff, with no design work required. Staff can follow it alongside their normal duties, managers take part through the quarterly reviews, and progress can be used in appraisals and personal development plans.
Getting started
It starts when you do
The programme is included in membership at no extra charge and is accessed through the IAM Membership platform. It begins automatically on joining or upgrading, with the first weekly email arriving in the member’s first week. Members who complete a year can repeat the programme at their grade, add elective courses matched to their role, or move to the programme for their next grade after upgrading.
